Piano Auctions was established in 2003 by Sean McIlroy and Richard Reason after they left Bonhams. Its inaugural auction took place at Conway Hall in Holborn in September 2003. George McIlroy succeeded Richard Reason as director in 2022. The business is a member of the Society of Fine Art Auctioneers and the Music Industries Association.

UK sales are run from Watford, with an EU viewing venue in Bodegraven. Lots offered include upright and grand pianos, as well as antique, restored and rare pianos. Harpsichord lots are also offered.
